Everyone is asking me for a recipe to use up their left over Easter eggs, we never have that problem here as chocolate is never sitting around if i’m in the house. Here are some yummy double chocolate hot cross buns which taste almost like a brownie, enjoy x
What you will need:
Edibles:
HOT CROSS BUNS
- 4 Cups of Flour
- 1/3 Cup of Caster Sugar
- 2 tsp Mixed Spice
- 1/2 tsp Ground Cloves
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- Pinch of Grated Nutmeg
- 1 tbsp of Dried Yeast
- 40g Unsalted Butter ( extra to serve)
- 1 1/2 Cups of Warm Milk
- 1 Egg
- 2 Tbsp Dutch Cocoa
- 1 and 1/2 Cup of Chocolate Chips
- Oil
TOPPING
- 1/2 Cup of Flour
- 1/3 Cup of Water
- Wilton Gel Colours in Black (if making Miffy)
GLAZE
- 1/3 Cup of Water
- 2 tbsp Caster Sugar
TOOLS:
- Toothpicks
- Tea Towel

1.Place the flour, caster sugar, spices, cocoa and yeast into a large mixing bowl and mix. Melt the butter and lightly beat the egg. Warm the milk slightly in a saucepan and once its tepid, add the butter, egg and half of the milk to the bowl and mix. Keep adding little by little milk to the bowl and mixing until a soft dough forms. You might not need all of the milk. Lightly flour a clean surface and knead the dough a little. Flatten the dough and place the chocolate chips on top. Fold and knead the dough to incorporate the ingredients. Lightly knead for ten minutes. Place the dough into a lightly oiled large bowl, cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave in a warm place to double in size (1 to 1.5 hours)

2. Tip the dough out of the bowl onto a lightly floured surface and cut into twelve portions. Take a portion into your hands and stretch and fold the dough into a ball shape. place them snuggly into a lined and greased tin (20 x 20cm). Cover again with the damp tea towel and allow to rise for another half an hour. Pre heat your oven to 190 degrees C. To make the topping, mix the flour and water into a smooth paste in a bowl. Place it into a zip lock bag, snip off the end of the bag and decorate your buns. If you would like to make miffy, colour a little paste black and using a toothpick to pick the smallest blob to dot on for the eyes and a cross for the mouth. Place your hot cross buns into the oven for around 15 minutes or until the look cooked, if you are unsure you can test that they are cooked in the middle with a knife. While they are cooking make the glaze by heating the sugar and water in a saucepan and boil for 3 minutes. Once the buns are cooked, brush the glaze over them and enjoy hot with some butter x
